I’m passionate about teaching and providing students with the quality education and individualized instruction they all deserve.
Growing up, I was the kid who asked my teachers for extra homework and roped my younger siblings into 'playing school' at home. My professional journey began right out of college in 2006, teaching third grade in DC Public Schools. For 13 years, I dedicated myself to public education, gaining invaluable experience across various systems. During that time, my family grew – I married my husband, we brought home our chocolate lab, Brody (now 11 and a fan-favorite of our classroom), and we welcomed our three children: Grant (8), Margaret (6), and Eli (4).
It was the experience of becoming a parent that truly shifted my perspective as an educator. While I loved teaching, my eyes were opened to the specific needs and daily challenges facing students in larger classrooms. This realization—that I could offer a more focused, student-centered approach than was feasible in a traditional system— is what led me to resign in 2020 and launch Sanford Scholars. I feel incredibly fortunate to quite literally be living my dream job, providing the individualized education I know
every child deserves.
I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember.
The seed for Sanford Scholars was planted in 2018. As a 5th-grade teacher with a class of 29, I was acutely aware of the limitations of the traditional model. As a new parent at the time, my perspective had shifted; I began seeing every student not just as a student, but as another person’s child. Standing in the hallway one day, I noted how far our line stretched down the hall, then I looked at each student individually and realized the core problem: The attention they received from me, as their teacher, was far less than I would accept for my own son. This intense desire to do more—to provide the individualized focus that large class sizes inherently prohibit—led directly to the creation of Sanford Scholars.
